If this is a fashion photoshoot or one that dictates a certain attire, like surfing, then what follows may not be as relevant. These are simply guidelines for you to consider when preparing for your shoot.

Light clothing can provide an awesome crisp look

If you would like to create a slimmer appearance, then it’s probably best to avoid white. That is unless the white is somewhat reduced, eg. white shirt worn under a dark jacket. On the plus side, white can look beautifully simple, fresh, and stylish. Keep in mind that photoshoots can get messy, particularly outdoor shoots, so I suggest a backup in case of accidental marks/stains.  933A0271_web933A0271_web

Darker clothes can be slimming

It’s well known that darker clothes can definitely provide a slimming effect. If the background is also dark they will blend which draws attention to the face - the most important part of the image. Keep in mind the context and environment of the photoshoot when deciding if to incorporate dark colors. Here in Los Angeles it’s mostly very sunny and the vibe is generally casual (especially at the beach!), so dark colors and blacks may not always be the best choice.  still_loony aka n_retouch_IMG_8694_webstill_loony aka n_retouch_IMG_8694_web

Go easy on the vibrant colors

Very bright colors can dominate an image and distract attention away from the face, which should be the main subject. On bright days these bold colors can pop even more. Of course, all of this might be fine if the goal of the shoot is to showcase some statement clothing or accessory. If you let me know in advance what you have then I can select backdrops that will best compliment your preference, ie. by color pairing or contrasting.  1X4A0893v2_web1X4A0893v2_web

Avoid heavy prints, patterns, and prominent logos

These will almost certainly become a distraction. In particular, small patterns in clothing can sometimes cause distortions to appear in the portrait. None of these are dealbreakers for a photoshoot, in fact I work with them all the time, but you should keep in mind how they will affect the viewers attention.  IMG_1130_webIMG_1130_web

Balance out the flesh

For more casual portraits, flesh can compete for attention with the face, which should be the primary focal point. The solution is to reduce exposed areas of skin and balance things out. This can be done simply with long sleeve clothing, pants/leg wear. Again, this isn’t a big deal at all so don’t feel like you have to eliminate your favorite short sleeved dress!  933A2888_web933A2888_web

Don’t overdo the accessories

Accessories that scream for attention either due to quantity or size can distract attention away from what should be the primary focus - the face. Simple and minimal usually works best.  933A0103_web933A0103_web

Glasses

It’s fine to wear glasses and 100% your choice. I recommend you go with the option that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident since that makes for the better images. If the shoot is outdoors and it’s sunny then you may need sunglasses to keep you from squinting even when I position you with the sun to your back. Keep in mind glass reflects and if we are using flash then I will position the light source in such a way as to hide or reduce the glare. That may limit the compositions but it usually isn’t an issue.  933A7052_web933A7052_web

Make Up, Hair & Nails

Typically, it’s best for hair styles to be simple and off the face, especially the eyes which are the most critical part of the image. Hair falling over the face can cause distracting shadows, which can be harsh and unflattering if the light is bright. If it’s an outdoor shoot then the wind can blow the hair all over the place, which can add energy for a cool luck or frustratingly block the eyes and cast shadows. If this might be an issue then I recommend you bring a hair tie or hat to keep hair off the face. Tip: If you bring a hair tie then don’t leave it on your wrist when not in use.

It can be a good idea to have your make up professionally applied for your photography session since it will have a positive effect on how you look and feel. I work with two local pros that clients always speak well of but if you have your preferred hair and make up stylist that’s fine with me! Make sure to allow plenty of time for makeup and/or hair before your scheduled session. In my experience it almost always takes longer than expected.

I recommend nails are be manicured and avoiding chipped nail polish.  IMG_2942_webIMG_2942_web

Necklines for a Portrait

Generally speaking a neckline that comes up close to the neck is the most flattering. More open necklines tend to make the neck look thicker in a photograph. Conversely, necklines that sit closer to the base of the neck can frame the face nicely while providing a slimming effect.  1X4A3243_YT_web1X4A3243_YT_web

Group and family portrait sessions

Most of the above guidelines still apply. The challenge here is to achieve a balanced composition where no-one dominates the scene. Usually the best way to do this is to keep clothing choices simple and coordinating wardrobe in advance.  As mentioned, avoid loud or busy patterns and large logos - unless of course you’re all on a team or something where that’s important. Solid colors are best.

Start by deciding if the basic tone of the clothing should be warm-toned (yellows/whites/browns, etc.) or cool-toned (blues/grays/blacks, etc.). The season, time of day, event, and location can all help inform this choice as well as guide your color palette. Keeping the palette simple and co-ordinated will focus the viewers attention on the faces and individuals who make up the portrait. Too much variety in colors or contrasting tones can become distracting. White tops with chinos or jeans is a classic simple, casual look. Jeans are especially enduring and great for fun, flattering, looks since they don’t show wrinkles and the wearer can feel more comfortable/relaxed. Pair with light color tops for a fresh, clean, minimalist look that pretty much everyone can assemble from their existing wardrobe. Pastels colors can often compliment skin tones while dark colors are typically slimming and often provide a more chic or contemplative look. For any kids, try to select clothes that fit well, ie. not be too snug or too baggy.

Overall, it’s important for everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed in their clothes so try not to push people into wearing something they don’t like. You want the vibe to remain positive for the best results and people are probably already anxious about have their picture taken - even though they will most likely have a fun time during the shoot! Ultimately we want capture those unique personalities and bring out the best in everyone.  1X4A3419v4_web1X4A3419v4_web

Young children

Kids tend to shun more formal clothing and most definitely do not care for them the way adults do. After all, they don’t have to get them dry cleaned or repaired! Photoshoots can be a very fun experience for young children but they can lose interest quickly. So, with these in mind where possible choose outfits that will allow them to showcase their personality and not their ability to throw a tantrum. Bright solid colors and/or silly themes always work well to convey playfulness. Consider cute hats, boots, scarves and other accessories that can be used as fun props to help create more natural ‘poses’. I find that a small bottle of bubbles can work wonders on photoshoots both for holding their attention and creating beautiful scenes.  IMG_1029_webIMG_1029_web

Teenagers/Young Adults

Teenagers/Young adults are constantly experimenting with looks and it’s important to give them leeway to express their own style. You can provide ideas and mention some of the key points made in this article but at the end of the day it’s best to keep the vibe positive.  933A1706_web933A1706_web

Professional Headshots

While many of the above guidelines also apply to professional headshots (eg. avoid logos, blacks for slimming, etc), here are some additional points to consider.

WOMEN:

  • The neckline is particularly important for headshots since this composition features the upper half more prominently. Tops and dresses with asymmetrical or modest necklines are a good choice as are round necklines which look elegant, classic and professional. V-necks can convey a more relaxed composure but may not sit as well over the shoulders and chest. give off a more casual vibe and don’t typically sit as nicely over your shoulders and chest.
  • It’s a good idea to bring at least one dress to your photoshoot and try to keep it free from wrinkles which can look more pronounced in pictures. Thicker fabrics tend to be less prone to wrinkles than thin but it also depends on the material.
  • Feel free to wear jewelry and pair with each outfit.
  • Unless collared shirts are part of a job-specific attire then these are usually best to avoid.
  • Wear simple, natural looking makeup to subtly enhance rather than stand out.
  • Bring solid colored neutrals and basics for mixing and matching.
  • If you can’t decide then send me pics of what you’re considering or bring along a suitcase full of options and I can help you narrow down.

MEN:

  • For casual looks or actor headshot sessions, usually a simple basic soft tee and long sleeve shirt work best.
  • Wear white, grey, black, and taupe. Avoid very bright colors.
  • Align your look with your ‘personal brand’. For example, if you have a playful fun personality then lets capture that! Maybe add some quickly element. I remember seeing a headshot with Steve Martin and he had a serious expression while the pen in his shirt pocket was leaking ink all over the shirt. If you have a favorite shirt with a fun pattern, bring it along and I’m sure we can do something with it.
  • Bring options. Meaning different ties, shirts, suit jackets, pants, and accessories.
  • If you can’t decide then send me pics of what you’re considering or bring along a suitcase full of options and I can help you narrow down.
  • Comb or style your hair and if necessary groom facial hair.

…and finally

As mentioned before, these are simply suggestions based on what often works well photographically. Ultimately, it’s your shoot and it’s the photographer’s job to bring the best out of each person and each composition. This begins with relaxing the subject, who may be nervous about their first photoshoot or some insecurity, and a well chosen outfit that makes the wearer happy, confident, and comfortable should be a priority.

In my experience people are surprised at how much fun photoshoots can be and it’s hard to argue against the value of preserving fleeting precious moments forever.

If you have any ideas, suggestions or questions about what to wear for your photoshoot then please let me know. I’m always happy to provide more detailed advice and kick ideas around. See you soon!

Taking my dance photography up to the next level! https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2021/7/taking-my-dance-photography-up-to-the-next-level In this vlog I get to shoot with Yesenia Adame, an aerial artist (aka aerialist) here in Los Angeles, California.

Aerial Art is dance or acrobatic movement performed while suspended in the air. It's also a fun, unique, and effective workout, or so I'm told since I didn't try it myself. LOL. Aerialists are known for their upper body and core strength as well as flexibility, control, and grace. Besides the obvious physical aspects, Aerial Art is a great way to express yourself and explore your more creative side while flying in the air. It also works on a cerebral level since it can be an intimidating activity, often requiring the artist to overcome fear. This is something I discuss with Yesenia in the video. [see below for how to learn more about getting started with aerial arts]

I shoot a lot of dancers but this was my first time photographing aerial arts and it was an extremely rewarding experience that I highly recommend to other photographers. That said it didn't come without some challenges. including: 1) Light - due to schedules we had to start around midday when the light was very harsh and the sun was positioned over the ocean. Early morning sun would have bathed Yesenia in softer golden light as she swung out over the ocean. But by the time we started Yesenia was in shadow and I had to use 2 speedlites to balance out the bright background. Even with that I still had to do significant work in post to lift the shadows and reduce the highlights. This explains why some of the pics have a bit of a HDR look about them. I'm not a fan of HDR. 2) Composition - We scouted the area for the best combination of epic unobstructed ocean views framed by palm trees but it's not really until you set up the rig and hang from the apparatus that you get a true sense for how everything will look. In fact, we had to move the entire rig a couple of times to optimize the composition with respect to the surroundings and sun position. 3) People/Animals - With this being such a stunning public setting it attracts a lot of people and during our visit they were out in force. It wasn't a big deal and we just waited our turn to take advantage of the space.

A big thank you to Yesenia's husband Zach for helping out with the hand held flash, Kaylee for providing her aerial arts expertise, and Kaylee's partner for assembling the rig.

Is this the best sunrise photoshoot location in Los Angeles? https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2021/7/is-this-the-best-sunrise-photoshoot-location-in-los-angeles In this vlog, I get to shoot (pre-pandemic) with the multi-talented actress, model, writer, and dancer Ursula Maria at the iconic Griffith Observatory in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, California.

With its stunning vistas, could this be the best place in the city for a sunrise photoshoot? Well, as you will see it's a case of yes and no. On the plus side you have the unrivaled unobscured views, classical architecture, and beautiful surroundings. However, this makes it an extremely popular place to view sunrises and sunsets so for a photoshoot expect to be fighting for good compositions with loads of people. Of course, this location is for everyone to enjoy and providing you are patient and respectful it's well worth a visit.

See if we managed to achieve our objective of shooting 4 very different looks. Let me know what you think of this vlog in the comments and also whether you have ideas for future shoots or would like me to demonstrate a particular technique in more detail.

A big thank you to Ursula and Akemi (who provided did Ursula's makeup) for being so well prepared and professional, not to mention showing off their amazing talents.

Groovy Rollerskating Photoshoot with Kellllllllllls! https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/12/groovy-rollerskating-photoshoot-with-kellllllllllls Welcome to my grooviest photoshoot ever!

In this vlog I get to shoot with Kellllllllllls (11 letter 'L's), a passionate roller skater and a leading figure in the Venice Beach roller skating scene. Her talents are now inspiring the world to lace up their boots after her posts on TikTok exploded, garnering as many as 10million views per post and the attention of the world's media. What I find particularly mind blowing is that she has only be skating for 3 years!

This shoot was a blast from beginning to end and I've tried to reflect this with a more fun approach to the editing than prior vlogs. I would love to hear what you think of this more laid back style.

We really want to hear from you about this shoot! Are you new to rollerskating? Are you inspired to start again? Do you have any fun anecdotes? Or, are you a photographer who would like to shoot more action portraits? Drop a comment below!

Photoshoot With A Dancer From Harry Potter https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/12/photoshoot-with-a-dancer-from-harry-potter In this vlog I get to shoot with Kate Coleman, a professional dancer here in Los Angeles. When there's not a pandemic she performs as a Beauxbatons dancer for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood, California.

We shot at 3 very different locations. Royce Hall with its classic ornate architecture seemed the perfect fit for ballet, whereas the sculpture and atrium were better suited to contemporary dance.

We were careful to practice safe distancing and/or wear masks throughout the shoot. UCLA was perfect because of its incredible architecture and wide open spaces. College was not in session at the time.

Let me know what you think in the comments, in particular whether you'd like me to shoot anything specific or demonstrate a particular technique in more detail.

A big thank you to Kate for bringing her A game and also her friend Alicia who was always on hand and happy to help.

Comica Boomx-d MI2 wireless mic thoughts...
PROS:
- Nicely packaged

Iconic Los Angeles Locations During The Pandemic - Part 1 https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/12/iconic-los-angeles-locations-during-pandemic---part-1 Back in May 2020 Los Angeles County issued a series of unprecedented directives to citizens and businesses to help mitigate spread of the deadly global virus. This included shutting down shops, parks, beaches and all but essential businesses. The 'stay-at-home' order allowed outdoor exercise as long a mask was worn and safe distancing was practiced.

It occurred to me that we were living in an extraordinary (hopefully never to be repeated) moment in human history and I felt compelled to make a video record/archive of how life looked in my particular corner of the world - Los Angeles.

So, I used my daily exercise to visit nearby iconic locations in the area and created this 5 part series, which covers:
#1 Downtown Los Angeles
#2 Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard
#3 Beverly Hills, UCLA, Century City, Melrose Avenue
#4 Santa Monica
#5 Venice Beach
I have pretty good knowledge of these areas and in addition to drawing attention to differences versus pre-pandemic life and fun facts, I took the opportunity to point out great places for photoshoots. After all, I am a photographer and this is a photography channel!

If you're new to my channel, it's about photography related things mainly in the Los Angeles area. I shoot with amazing people at inspiring places while providing some simple tips along the way.

Epic Photoshoot on The Queen Mary Ocean Liner https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/12/epic-photoshoot-on-the-queen-mary-ocean-liner This was one of my most epic shoots and plaudits must go to presenter/actor/model Caitlin Patricia Weiler for making it happen. She had booked a commercial modeling job on the historic ocean liner The Queen Mary and during her downtime the owners kindly gave us permission to conduct an editorial shoot on the ship. We only had 24hrs to pull this off but we absolutely couldn't let this incredible opportunity slip by so we raced to prep equipment, wardrobe etc. I mean how often do you get to shoot on a legendary ocean liner from the 30's?!?! - I mean it's bigger than Titanic!

Caitlin gathered together some perfect vintage outfits for the occasion and together with my usual equipment (see below) we were able to create some of our most eye-catching pics ever!

See how I used a variety of settings, features, and techniques to capture multiple looks in changing light at this very unique and memorable setting.

A big thank you to Caitlin....

Beach Ballet Photoshoot https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/12/beach-ballet-photoshoot In my latest vlog I get to shoot at Venice Beach with awesomely talented ballerinas Grace and Alexa.

It was a midday shoot, the sky was sky blue, the sun was harsh and the place was packed with it being a national holiday but we didn't let these challenges stop us from getting brilliant new pics for our portfolios.

See how I used a variety of settings, features, and techniques to capture Grace & Alexa's amazing skills at this iconic setting.

A big thank you to Margaret and Florrie (moms of Grace and Alexa) for helping to organize this fun shoot and providing many of the video clips used in this vlog.

Superhero Cosplay Photoshoot - Part 2 https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/12/superhero-cosplay-photoshoot---part-2 In this fun vlog (the second of two parts), I collaborate with local cosplayer Nikki Moxxi to bring another one of her favorite superhero characters to life, New 52 Supergirl. If you haven't already seen it, check out Part One featuring Nikki cosplaying Mary Jane as Spiderman... Superhero Cosplay Photoshoot - Part 1

Our heroic shoot continues with Nikki transforming from her Mary Jane as Spiderman to Supergirl. We find new locations and try 3 awesome techniques that you might like to try....
1) Levitation - we freeze leaps to give the appearance of flight
2) Cloning - we combine multiple exposures on one image
3) Cinemagraph - we isolate movement to create a cool effect

All three techniques are pretty easy to do and you don't need fancy equipment. When combined with Nikki's superhero characters it makes for brilliant eye-catching results. I would love to get your feedback on each of them.

A big thank you to Nikki for being an absolute pro with her extensive preparation, turning up super early, committing to quality results, and sharing her passion.

Superhero Cosplay Photoshoot - Part 1 https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/11/superhero-cosplay-photoshoot---part-1 In this vlog (the first of two parts), I collaborate with local cosplayer Nikki Moxxi to bring one of her favorite superhero characters to life, Mary Jane as Spiderman.

With Long Beach California doubling for Gotham City, moody clouds replacing the usual bright blue sky, and Nikki bringing her A game (not to mention her awesome outfits) we had all the necessary ingredients for a super shoot.

We really enjoyed getting creative with this shoot and it was important for us to achieve authentic eye-catching looks without resorting to digital artistry post production effects. You will see that we (well, Nikki) went to great lengths to nail each shot, sometimes repeating very physical poses 10+ times.

A big thank you to Nikki for being an absolute pro with her extensive preparation, turning up super early, committing to quality results, and sharing her passion.

The Art of Fashion Photography (Part 1) - Featuring Abigail Spenser Hu https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/11/the-art-of-fashion-photography-part-1---featuring-abigail-spenser-hu In this vlog (the first of two parts), I got to shoot with artist, designer, and influencer Abigail Spenser Hu. Our photoshoot took place in and around Los Angeles County Museum of Art which was the perfect inspirational canvas for our artistic collaboration.

If you saw my last vlog you will appreciate how the harsh light in Los Angeles can be a real challenge for photography, from both a technical and comfort standpoint. For example, at times it was a challenge for Abigail to keep her eyes open and as the temperature rose quickly (it reached 93!) it was important to rest and stay hydrated. Despite this Abigail kept up her energy and did an amazing job modeling the latest Fall fashions she'd prepared from designer labels such as Gucci - so a big thank you to her!

This is Part 1 of our Art of Fashion Photography collaboration and Part 2 will be available next week. If you want to see more of Abigail then check out my full Q&A interview with her using this link... Q&A with Abigail Spenser Hu

Outdoor Photoshoot Success and Failure https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/11/outdoor-photoshoot-failure-and-success In this vlog, I got to shoot with actor and model Christina Fuursted at 4 locations in downtown Los Angeles. We started early (7am) knowing that the sun would be very harsh and challenging if we left it any later. In the end, the bright sun helped to generate both failure and success during the shoot.

The first location demonstrates my failure to pay attention to the primary light source (the sun) resulting in pretty rubbish pics from a technical standpoint. [please keep watching I promise they get better!]

Luckily we hit our stride after that and after paying more attention to the light I was able to utilize it more effectively, including bounced light from reflective surfaces, to achieve really successful eye-catching pics.

A big thank you to Christina for participating in this vlog. She channelled her inner Viking to battle against the difficult conditions and it paid off with some epic new pics for her portfolio.

Outdoor Portrait Photography Tips and Hidden Dangers! https://www.radicalsnaps.com/blog/2020/11/outdoor-portrait-photography-tips-and-hidden-dangers In my FIRST EVER vlog post I take you on a typical outdoor portrait shoot with a model at a local park here in Los Angeles, California. I describe what I'm doing and why, as if you were a friend tagging along with me.

It isn't a tutorial where I tell you what to do. It's meant to be a window on my own personal workflow, technique, and approach to shooting outdoor portraits where you can maybe hear a few tips and ideas.

If my vlog inspires you to grab your camera and go out to shoot then I'll be thrilled!

A big thank you to Valeria and Ashley for helping to make this shoot possible. They have fascinating backgrounds and I encourage you to follow them on Instagram...
